Berkeley Guard was founded in 1982 by Julian Berkeley and is still a privately owned family business. We do little advertising, preferring client referrals. Initially Berkeley Guards were installed mostly in the west end of London from our office in Notting Hill Gate. In 1989 our administration moved to Berkshire and then to Hampshire. 20 Powis Mews became an engineer base. We now install and maintain approved security systems throughout most of southern England. Capstan Security has been presented with the Bronze Alarm Performance Award by the Metropolitan Police at a ceremony held at New Scotland Yard. The annual awards scheme was introduced by the Metropolitan Police to recognise alarm companies that achieve the lowest average of false alarm rates throughout the police authority’s area. Reducing false alarms forms part of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO 2004) policy, introduced with the keynote aim of enabling forces across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to provide an effective response to genuine alarm activations by reducing the number of false calls. A little bit of history... We had just been burgled. A traumatic experience. Bemoaning this, telling a friend about it, the friend said: "You'll have to get a burglar alarm". Agreed, we would. "I can recommend someone," the friend, a conscientious housewife, said. "He doesn't cause any disturbance or dirt. "He even changes his shoes for slippers at the door." She had "sold" us Carlton Alarms. And it was perfectly true. Carlton changed his shoes at the door and caused minimum disturbance. Wires and junction boxes were concealed. The only obvious evidence of a security system was the bright blue and white plastic siren box on the outside of the house. A warning to would-be burglars. A deterrent. In the way of things our next door neighbour now felt exposed without an alarm. That experience took place almost twenty years ago when Carlton was just a one man business. Electrician Carlton Littleford served his time as an electrician and worked in the trade for 20 years, some of the time installing and maintaining intruder alarms. He recognised, in the growing market for alarms systems resulting from the growth of crime, an opportunity to start his own business. Within 18 months the volume of business had grown to the extent that it was becoming difficult for him to give the standard of service - 24 hours a day, seven days a week - that he insisted upon. He recruited and trained an engineer and added an additional distinctively blue and white van to the small fleet. From that beginning, Carlton Alarms has expanded until it now employs eight full-time engineers. Carlton himself has not lost the personal touch: he trains or re-trains all the engineers, supervises them to make sure that they maintain the high standards he set. Always, he personally makes the initial call on every client. He carries out the surveys, makes the recommendations and gives a demonstration and a quotation.
