BSI Product Services tests a huge variety of industrial and consumer products, from medical devices to crash helmets and seat belts, from fire extinguishers to electrical equipment of every description from lamps for football stadia to three-pin plugs. This testing work is done to help industry develop new and better products and to make sure that products meet current and future laws and regulations. Any product that comes under a European Directive and is to be placed on the market in the EU, must bear CE marking - it's a legal requirement. BSI Product Services holds 'Notified Body' status for 15 major EU Directives - such as Construction Products, Medical Devices, Personal Protective Equipment and Pressure Equipment - so that we can test and certify products leading to the award of the CE mark. BSI Product Services also owns the Kitemark symbol, which is known and trusted by more than 80% of the adult British population. The mark, which was originated in 1903 for use on tramway rails, is today seen on products worldwide - from manhole covers and Christmas lights to lawnmowers and cricket balls - enabling manufacturers to achieve product differentiation. There are currently more than 2,400 Kitemark licences, covering some 2,600 production locations worldwide and held by major companies like Chubb, Valor, British Gas and Hygena. BSI Product Services also gives manufacturers information on technical requirements and product testing and certification schemes for just about any country in the world. In the UK, it also performs testing for a variety of government departments, regulatory bodies and trade associations, such as number plate testing for the Department for Transport (DfT) and cables testing for the British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC).
